[TUTORIAL] Using Custom Mood Themes
I know there are a ton of these out there, but every one I've come across seems to have a bunch of extra stuff that just throws people off. So! Here is my simple guide to using a custom mood theme on your LJ, with any account type. [Edit: Not entirely sure you can switch back to the basic account level anymore.]

FIRST, IF YOU HAVE A BASIC ACCOUNT: You must upgrade it to Plus for the time being. Don't worry, you can always switch it back [?] after you upload the mood theme. To upgrade, go to the Account Status page and click Upgrade to Plus. Skip to the bottom and tick the "No thanks" option, then click save. After you've installed the theme, go back to that page and choose Switch to a Basic Account.

INSTALLING YOUR THEME:
» STEP 01. Upload all the images to a server that allows direct linking, such as Photobucket.
TIP: If you're impatient like me, you'll hate the thought of selecting all those files to upload on Photobucket, so now would be a good time to look into Flock, which allows you to upload hundreds of images to your Photobucket account at once.

» STEP 02. Go to the Command Console and execute the following, editing the title and description to fit:
moodtheme_create "Mood Theme Title" "Short mood theme description."

» STEP 03. You now have a moodthemeid number. Take note of it, and do not close the page! Now comes the fun part. Copy what's in the text box below and paste it into a new Notepad document. Turn off word wrap or adjust the window so the lines don't break.

» STEP 04. In Notepad, use replace (Ctrl+H) to change ###### to the moodthemeid you just got. Next, use replace to correct the URL of the mood images. For example, I would replace MOODIMAGEURL with the bolded portion of this: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/akuenu-moods/ryro/awake.gif. Finally, change WIDTH to the pixel width of the mood images, and do the same for HEIGHT. Paste all of that into the box on the command console page and click execute.

» STEP 05. Now, in the Look and Feel section of the Journal Display page, select your new mood theme from the dropdown list. Click Save Changes, and you're done!

If you have any questions, feel free to comment here and I'll do my best to answer. :D

Thank you thank you thank you. ^^ I'd like to mention - make sure you have the right file type. It says .gif so you have to change it if your picture is .jpg or .bmp or whatever.

You'll need to upload the images somewhere, yes. Registering for a Photobucket account is really simple, and that's probably the easiest way to host your images.

Hello :) I was just wondering if you know of any way to change the default moods; for example make "angry" appear written as "upset" or something? I want to do a fandom animated mood theme with fangirly moods like .. idk, "flaily" or "extra fangirly". Do you know if there is any way to do that?

Sorry, but no. I don't think that's possible, and if it is I have no idea how to do it. :/
